Information Society – chance or threat ?
About 1.5 year ago I started to work as a nanny of 20 months old girl. Since then I've been watching her growing. When I met Ann, she already could turn on the PC. Her favorite entertainment was to watch short movies on Youtube and she could even point a movie that she would like to see !!! Her favorite was a videoclip of "Jożin z bażin" - she used to start every day with watching this video.
When I was at Ann's birthday party (2 years old), her mom asked to pass the remote controller for TV. Ann was able to choose correct remote controllet from among 3 different remote controllers. Even now some adults can't get used to the fact that they have several remote controllers for different devices.
Today Ann is 3 years old and is able to turn on the PC, log in to her profile on youtube (without typing a password), and run drawing program or browser game. She can use a mouse and taka first steps in typing on keyboard.
The world of technology runs forward very fast. This forces people to adjust their living styles. It's obvious for modern children how to use present technological toys. Even if they still can't talk, they know that there is somewhere ENTER or PLAY button.
This kids will shape our future society. When they go to primary school, they start to feel a need to communicate with each other – they will start using cell phones, first communicators will appear, they will start chating. After school, young people rather spend their time in virtual world than meeting friends in real. They use computer every day and it's normal for them.
Chance or threat?
Technology gives us a lot opportunities, but we should also be aware of many threats. A lack of awerness and knowledge about using modern technology could be a problem. There is a lot of threats when using the Internet. We should mention here a large amount of data that Internet contains. It's very important to be able to segregate reliable information from these that are not reliable. Another problem is Internet anonymous, which cacuses young people not to know the difference between good and evil.
Threats could be even more serious. It is up to us, how we raise our childs. We have the opportunity to eliminate these threats. We should teach young people how to correctly use this large amount of data.
Or maybe we should learn this ourself first?
